The Case for a Pre-Mashtotsian Armenian Alphabet

On December 19, 2009 I gave a very important, comprehensive and lengthy lecture at the AGBU Montreal Armenian Studies program arguing for the existence of a Pre-Mashtotsian Armenian alphabet.

This is an extremely important topic which I believe all those interested in the study of the Armenian language must understand.  To date, the debates about the issue and academic literature, have been in general restricted to an extremely narrow audience.  My intention is to make this material available to a much wider audience. My hope is that other researchers and lecturers will use this material.  I am also hoping that teachers of Armenian language and history will be able to use this lecture to create their own instructional material.

2009 Դեկտեմբեր  19ին՝ կարեւոր, երկար եւ համապարփակ դասախօսութիւն մը ներկայացուցած եմ ՀԲԸՄ Մոնթրէալի Հայագիտական դասընթացքներու ծիրին մէջ, ուր պաշտպանած եմ նախամաշտոցեան հայկական գիրերու գոյութեան տեսակէտը:

 

Ըստ ինծի՝ հայերէն լեզուի ուսումնասիրութեամբ զբաղող իւրաքանչիւր անհատ պէտք է որ լաւապէս հասկնայ այս յոյժ կարեւոր նիւթը: Ցարդ, այս հարցի շուրջ տարածուած բանավէճերը եւ գիտական հրատարակութիւնները մնացած են մասնագիտական նեղ ծիրի մը մէջ: Նպատակս այս նիւթերը մատչելի դարձնել է ընդլայնուած հասարակութեան մը: Կը յուսամ թէ ուրիշ հետազօտողներ եւ դասախօսներ պիտի այս նիւթերը գործածեն: Նոյնպէս կը յուսամ թէ հայերէնի եւ հայոց պատմութեան ուսուցիչները պիտի կարենան այս դասախօսութիւնը գործածել որպէս ուսուցական այլազան ծրագիրներու նիւթ:

Father's Day Lecture - Armenian Embassy Ottawa June 20 2009

In June of 2009, I was invited by the Armenian Cultural Association of Ottawa to give a lecture about a single word.  The word father in Armenian (Հայր).  This lecture has actually been one of the most popular ones that I have ever given.  The lecture was given in whole and in parts at least 6 times across North America.  The version in the videos is the most complete and true to the original.

 

This lecture was the first that I had given with a unique approach, which eventually was the one I have adopted for all my future themes.  I used a wide interdisciplinary method to demonstrate the interconnectedness of mutliple topics, starting from a single "seed" word.

The occasion was also special, because it marked the 10th aaniversary of this specific lecture.  It was also my first lecture given on Armenian soil.  I am grateful not only to those who invited me, but also to the chargé d'affaires of the Republic of Armenia, Mr. Arman Hagopian, himself a great scholar, who enabled that to happen, and was gracious enough to attend the event.

 

2009 Յունիսին, Օթթաուայի Հայկական Մշակութային Միութիւնը զիս հրաւիրեց դասախօսելու Հայրերու Օրուան առիթով, որպէս նիւթ ունենալով միակ բառ մը:  Հայր բառը: Այս դասախօսութիւնը իմ բոլոր նիւթերէս ամենէն ժողովրդականը եղած է: Ամբողջութեամբ կամ մասնակիօրէն տրուած է առնուազն  6 անգամներ, ամբողջ Հիւսիսային Ամերիկայի տարածքին:

 

Ասիկա առաջին դասախօսութիւնս է ուր գործածած եմ յատուկ մօտեցում մը, որ ապագային որդեգրեցի ընդհանրապէս բոլոր նիւթերուս համար: Գործածած եմ լայն եւ բազմամասնագիտական  միջոց,  յստակացնելու համար թէ ինչպէս բոլոր հարցերը իրարու ընդելուզուած են, սկսելով միակ «հունտ»ային բառէ մը:

 

Այս առիթը նոյնպէս եզակի էր, որովհետեւ այս դասախօսութեան տասնամեակն էր: Նաեւ առաջին անգամն է որ կը դասախօսէի հայկական հողի վրայ: Երախտապարտ եմ զիս հրաւիրողներուն, բայց մանաւանդ շնորհակալ եմ Հայաստանի Հանրապետութեան հաւատարմատար Պրն. Արման Յակոբեանին, ինքնին պատմագէտ, լեզուաբան ու բանասէր, որ ոչ միայն ինծի այդ առիթը ընծայեց, այլ նաեւ անձնապէս ներկայ գտնուեցաւ:

Viktor Hampartsoumyan - The Man With His Heart In Our Mountains and His Eyes Fixed On The Stars

This Lecture was given on April 15, 2009 as part of the AGBU Montreal Manuel Keusseyan Armenian Studies program. The purpose of the lecture was to familiarize the attendees with the fundamantal scientific accomplishments of the great Armenian astrophysicist, Viktor Hamapartsoumyan.

Այս դասախօսութիւնը տրուած է Ապրիլ 15, 2009 ին, Մոնթրէալի ՀԲԸՄի Մանուէլ Քէօսէեանի անուան Հայագիտականի Դասընթացքներու շարքին: Դասախօսութեան նպատակն էր լսարանի յաճախողներուն ծանօթացնել հայ մեծ աստղաբնագէտ Վիկտոր Համբարձումեանի գիտական նուաճումները:

The lecture starts with an introduction by Chahe Tanachian, the director of the program, where he presents the current sad situation of the Pyuragan Observatory which has been unable for several years to pay the membership fee to the International Astronomical Society whose president has been Viktor Hampartsoumyan for many years. I am glad to report that an important sum has been raised at te end of the lecture towards that goal. Anyone interested in contributing to this cause can write to Chahe at chahet@videotron.ca.

While the main language of the lecture is Western Armenian, I felt the need to give the first section in a bilingual fashion, alternating with English. I chose to do this because I was explaining difficult concepts in mathematics and physics in Armenian with mostly new terminology that was distributed as a glossary to the attendees; yet those same notions might become more familiar if I explained them in English.

Թէեւ դասընթացքին գլխաւոր լեզուն արեւմտահայերէնն է, ստիպուած զգացի առաջին բաժինը երկլեզու ներկայացնել անգլերէնի հետ միատեղ: Այդպիսի մօտեցում որդեգրեցի, որովհետեւ հայերէնով կը ներկայացնէի թուաբանագիտական եւ բնագիտական համեմատաբար բարդ յղացքներ՝ գործածելով նոր բառամթերք մը որ նախապէս բաժնած էի ներկաներուն որպէս դասախօսական բառացոյց: Միաժամանակ սակայն, այդ բարդ սկզբունքները կրնային աւելի դիւրամատչելի դառնալ եթէ զանոնք բացատրէի անգլերէնով:

During the last part of the lecture, when I was discussing how Viktor Hampartsoumyan's dream could become an inspiration to launch an international Armenian astronaut project, I am grateful to Sako Mekhgeavakian, an observant and regularly-attending student of the Armenian Studies classes, for pointing out that we already had one, in the person of James Bagian. While I knew of him, I had not realized that he had actually flown into space; I thought that he was recruited, but like many that do get recruited, he stayed in other important ground roles. It turns out that James Bagian has flown to space twice once in 1989 and a second time in 1991. I therefore acknowledge my error. I have since done my homework. Dr. Bagian's NASA bio can be found here. He currently heads the National Center for Patient Safety of the US Department of Veterans' Affairs. However, my recommendations at the end of the lecture still remain valid.

Դասախօսութեան աւարտին, երբ կը ներկայացնէի Վիկտոր Համբարձումեանի երազի իրագործման առաջարկ մը, հայ աստղանաւորդի միջազգային ծրագիր մը սկսելու համար, ուրախ եմ որ Սագօ Մխճաւագեանը, լսարանի ուշադիր եւ կանոնաւոր ունկնդիրներէն մին, ուղղեց սխալս թէ արդեն այդ աստղանաւորդը կայ, յանձինս Ճեյմս Պակեանի: Թէեւ լսած էի անոր մասին, սակայն չէի անդրադարձած թէ ան իսկապէս ճանապարհորդած էր դէպի տիեզերք, այլ կը կարծէի թէ մնացած էր երկրային կարեւոր պաշտօններու վրայ, ինչպէս բազմաթիւ նմանօրինակ ուրիշներ: Ըստ երեւոյթին, Ճեյմս Պակեանը երկու անգամ բարձրացած է տիեզերք, 1989ին եւ 1991ին: Ուրեմն կ'ընդունիմ սխալս: Հիմա արդեն իսկ պրպտումի պարտականութիւնս կատարած եմ: Տոքթ. The Vanishing Armenian Intellectuals

On February 18th, 2009, I gave this lecture at the AGBU Montreal Manuel Keusseyan Armenian Studies Program. The lecture was given in the language of the program, Western Armenian.



Այս դասախօսութիւնը տրուած է Փետրուար 18, 2009ին, ՀԲԸՄի Մոնթրէալի մասնաճիւղի Մանուէլ Քէոսէեանի անուան Հայագիտական Դասընթացքներու շարքին: Դասախօսութիւնը տրուած է արեւմտահայերէնով, որ սոյն դասընթացքին պաշտօնական լեզուն է:



The lecture was originally given in English at Columbia University on March 8th, 2008, within a full day of seminars and lectures entitled "The Diaspora and Its Discontents: Speaking Beyond Living Room Walls". Due to time constraints, my lecture time in New York was cut significantly (by over 80%). This version is in its entirity.

The day following the lecture I received the sad news of the passing away on February 15th, 2009 of the recognized intellectual, literary critic, teacher, editor and a close friend, Mr. Krikor Shahinian. He was a close friend, colleague and confidant of my father, the writer Armen Tarian and a member of the editorial team that had posthumously published his unpublished manuscripts. I belatedly dedicate this online version to his eternal memory. I know that he would agree with a lot of my conclusions.



Դասախօսութեանս յաջորդ օրը ստացայ ծանր լուրը ծանօթ մտաւորական, գրաքննադատ, ուսուցիչ, խմբագիր եւ ինծի մտերիմ բարեկամ, Պրն.
